Today Kapu-Meniya.in : Potato farmers have been hit by lockdown with unseasonal rains. Potato prices in Punjab's Jalandhar Mandi in early March ranged from Rs 1,400 to Rs 1,500 per quintal, but due to unseasonal rains, the potato could not be harvested on time due to which potato farmer Makhan Singh had to sell his crop at Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,100 per quintal. Is lying Potato-producing states received four to five unseasonal rains in March, followed by a 21-day lockdown across the country from March 24. Due to which labor, gunny and transportation are not available for potato digging, farmers have suffered heavy losses.
Today Potato farmer Makhan Singh of Jalandhar district of Punjab told Outlook that the rains affected the digging of potatoes four to five times in March. The lockdown took place across the country on 24 March, due to which the state government imposed curfew. He said that the prices were not getting for the last four-five years, this time the prices were fine, but due to unseasonal rains and curfew, the high prices could not be benefited. He told, "I have sold some crops for Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,100 per quintal, kept the rest in a cold store. They told that digging of potatoes requires more labor, whereas neither laborers got due to curfew Nor could the gunny be found, due to which the crop per hectare also reduced productivity per hectare.
Today Excavation delays due to rain and lockdown
Today Potato farmer Ambuj Sharma of Bahchaula village of Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district said that he had planted a potato crop in two acres. In the second week of March, the price of good quality potatoes in Azadpur mandi was Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,200 per quintal, but due to unseasonal rains could not be excavated. On March 24, the government closed the lockdown, causing migrant laborers to leave their villages, and the workers who survived were also not working in the fields due to fear of the corona virus. He said that potato digging starts from mid-February and almost all the potatoes come out of the fields by the end of March, but this time 12 to 15 per cent of the potatoes are still left in the fields which are getting spoiled in the fields.
Today Potato storage in cold store reduced by 30 percent
Today president of the Agra Cold Storage Association, Dr. Sudarshan Singhal, said that this time the storage of potatoes in the cold store has come down by 25 to 30 per cent from normal, as there was about four to five rains in the month of March, due to which the excavation was delayed. Once it rains, potatoes are not digged for three to four days. He said that the lockdown started due to Corona virus from March 24, so workers could not be found for storing potatoes in cold stores.
Today Potato demand reduced by 30 to 40 percent due to lockdown
Today Jagjit Singh, a farmer from Lalian Khurd village in Jalandhar district of Punjab, said that the prices of potatoes in the mandis were good this time, but they could not sell in the mandi due to curfew, which had to be kept in the store. Rajendra Sharma, general secretary of the Potato and Onion Merchant Association (POMA), Delhi Azadpur Mandi, said that due to the lockdown, demand for potatoes was 30 to 40 per cent lower than normal. Potato arrivals from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have 56 trucks on Wednesday, out of which only 35 to 40 trucks were sold. Before the lockdown, the average daily sales were 55 to 60 trucks. Potato price in the market is Rs 700 to 850 per 50 kg. The arrival of new potatoes stops by the end of March while this time it is expected to remain in the first week of May.

Today As per the preliminary estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture, the production of potato in the crop season 2018-19 is expected to increase by 6 per cent to 528 lakh tonnes as compared to 513 lakh tonnes of potatoes produced in the country last year.
